Dr. Neal Smatresk, President of UNLV will be the keynote speaker at the November Membership Luncheon where he will discuss UNLV and Las Vegas and their partnership for a sustainable future.
President Smatresk has pledged that UNLV will be steadfast with its commitment to provide students access to the careers of their dreams by giving them the best education possible, and that he will work to expand educational opportunities and access for underserved populations. He remains committed to the research mission of the university and credits community partners
and donors for making it possible to launch nationally prominent programs like the Lincy Institute, even at a time of severe state budget cuts, which will support regional health care, education, and social services. A new partnership with the most prestigious think tank in the world, the Brookings Institution, will help UNLV set the course for a brighter future for Nevada.
Dr. Neal J. Smatresk was named President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on August 6, 2009. Since 2007, he served as Executive Vice President and Provost and was responsible for leadership and administration of all academic and research programs, spanning 15 colleges and two professional schools. He received his Ph D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, he joined the University of Texas, Arlington
(UTA) department of biology in 1982. He served as a faculty member, department chair, and Dean of Science over a span of twenty two years, until his appointment as the chief academic officer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004.
